Spotlight On Our Assistant Coaches

Coach Name:

Shawterria D. Douglass

How I Got Started In Swimming:

I began taking swimming lessons at the age of four.  I continued taking lessons at the East Thomas neighborhood pool for three years.  At the age of seven I joined the swim team. At the age of nine, I advanced to the BPR swim team, and have been in the water ever since.

Education and Experience:

I am currently attending Miles College, majoring in Education.

I began coaching for the BPR’s swim team in 2006.  Along with Coach Franklin, we lead the team to an undefeated year, including being District III Champions.

Benefits Within This Field:

The benefits within the Aquatic field is that one of my dream to teach has come true.  Teaching has been a dream of mine since I was in the first grade.  It’s something to teach someone everything you know about a sport (or anything else) and know that they are achieving a goal within themselves.  I not only work with children, but also teach them how to save their life and also to teach them how to become lifeguards in the future.  However, the benefit that hits me most is that I am making a difference in the youth that I serve, and that they look up to me.  I love being a positive role model!

Swimming Accomplishments:

In the year 2001, I placed third overall in District III Championships.  I went to APAR State Championships and took 12th place out of 32 female swimmers in my age group.

In 2002, I was first place in the 100 year Freestyle at the Vestavia Swim Association meet.
